ASD
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological and developmental disorder affecting the way one interacts, communicates, and behaves. The symptoms and severity of the disorder vary by person, hence it being a spectrum disorder.
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), around 1 in 36 children has been identified with autism in the U.S. Internationally, 1% of the world population has ASD. In the state of Montana, 4% of children and teens are on the autism spectrum.
It's important for one to recognize traits and possible symptoms of ASD, but it’s critical to not self-diagnose. If you feel as though you may show signs of ASD, speak to a medical professional.
Symptoms
Symptoms of ASD may include but are not limited to:
Restricted or repetitive behaviors or interests
Poorly developed social skills
Difficulty with expressive and receptive communication
Delayed language skills
Delayed movement skills
Delayed cognitive or learning skills
Hyperactive, impulsive, and/or inattentive behavior
Several, none, or all of these symptoms may occur and one can still be diagnosed with ASD. This range of symptoms is regarded as where one falls on the autism spectrum.
